The Heart of Rock and Soul

A cutting guitar that could have only been played by Leiber and Stoller's sorcererlike apprentice, Phil Spector, slices between Rudy Lewis's despairing lead and the Latin percussion underneath. But it's the way the guitar plays off against horns and strings at the bridge that persuades you that this kid really will do anything to make it - and that the search is its own reward. The facts may be otherwise, but the atmosphere here is beyond argument.
